V&A Illustration awards

Grace Hunter
This is an illustration by Grace Hunter, her illustrations are clever because they can generate an atmosphere very well. For instance the office set of illustrations give a claustrophobic and dull feel. This image to the right uses a bird eye view to show the limit of space that the worker has - as we look down it feels as though we are taking away some of his privacy because we are evading his small space.

I really like these illustrations because they have a lot of movement. I like the lack of colour because the colour that is used gives depth to certain elements on the canvas.  This could be a good way to record memories because most of the time certain things are only remembered - for instance a woman's bright red coat might be remembered but not her facial features.

These illustrations really stood out for me because of the strange designs - such as the girls dress turning to fire. These elements are very subtle but the overall image is very striking. This is because each illustration appears to have a story behind them. What is the relation between this woman and man? We don't know but it draws us into the art further. I think that this art could be in cooperated well into the subject 'memory.' For instance when we think back to memories they can be easily influenced by imagination other people.  When I was a child I imagined I went into my wardrobe and actually went to Narnia - but this felt so real I would have thought it was real if I didn't know Narnia is not real. In this sense - this magical and fairy-tale like art could be used to exaggerate reality.
