Item 8 - SURFS UP

This is a photograph from around 5 - 4 years ago! In Cornwall there are some of the best waves for normal surfers (or like me body boarders!) At the time of this photograph I had only started body boarding. The water in Cornwall is freezing like ice and you can only stand it for an hour at most which is why locals there wear wetsuits (I have one now.) I go to Cornwall almost every year with the family so it's very important for me and is apart of my past also.

The picture below I drew to represent the feeling of body boarding and the waves of the Cornish water. When this photograph was taken, I visited a beach which had the most intense waves I have ever experienced - the waves were three times my height and easily pulled me under. If you don't surf or swim with big waves you won't know what it feels like when the waves pull you under and at the time it scared me so much (I came out and cried!) It is truly very frightening, your whole body is pulled under and cannot escape your are turning with the wave - you feel as though you are moving with the water and you cannot escape until the wave breaks (to the point you think you may even drown.)

I really like this image since it shows the powerful control of the waves. I drew the hands to represent this loss of control. The waves are surrounding the hands - however the hands appear to be turning the way the waves do.  I think that this picture has a lot of movement and tells my memory very well. I also really like the colours and use of negative space within my work because they make each other stand out even more.
